It’s Women’s History Month and to celebrate ahead of International Women’s Day, Ayamba LitCast had the honour of hosting Elina Augustine Jiwul, founder of Wonder Woman Nigeria.

The Challenges of Sensitization

One might think that the intent to do good would be met with support and praise, but that is rarely the case. For Wonder Woman, the organisation has met with challenges from even the beneficiaries of their aid. From school administrators wishing to withhold certain information from their charges to manipulative husbands that control their spouses’ world view. Yet, they have persevered and hope to continue doing so. 

Numerous Ways to Help

The organisation has launched a number of programs over its four years of existence, yet one that particularly stood out for most was the Little Sister project. In it, Wonder Woman calls on individuals to donate as little as ₦1000 naira monthly to cater for the basic needs of one young woman. This amount is used to purchase soap, deodorant, sanitary pads, etc. 

The decision to support one beneficiary is year long, meaning you will have to commit to 12 months of payment. This means ₦12, 000 for a single beneficiary, ₦24,000 for two, and so on.

There’s also the Random Act of Kindness Day Campaign. Wonder Woman calls for donations including food, clothes, cash, etc, and takes a walk in the community during which she shares said items with those she comes across. In one instance, Elina took a pair of twins into a Pep Store and did a complete makeover for them.

A Network of Volunteers

Wonder Woman came into existence following Elina’s charitable activities in Kano back in 2018. Away from her home of Kaduna State, she learnt the importance of sharing knowledge and getting help. 

Elina’s work has taken her to several States in the country. Upon visiting them, she ensures to coach the locals in each community she finds herself. This prepares them to become ambassadors of Wonder Woman’s cause, ensuring her projects continue to run even after she has left.

Elina also answered the burning question that the geeks at Ayamba Meet & Greet have had since being introduced to her. Their hopes were dashed as she confirmed that she isn’t a comic book fan, nor was her organisation named after the popular female superhero of the same name.
